Sri Chinmoy

Sri Chinmoy believed that spirituality is an integral part of everyday life. In the context of his own life he showed that the inner silence born of deep meditation can give meaning to everything we do. He was a painter, a poet, a musician, a singer, a composer an athlete - an extraordinary individual whose inspiration overflowed into numerous creative endeavours.

He was also a Spiritual Master, guiding seekers in their quest for self-discovery. He offered a path based on love, devotion and surrender to the Divine. This path has its roots in ancient India, but Sri Chinmoy adapted it to the West.

Sri Chinmoy was born in East Bengal, India in 1931. He spent his youth in a spiritual community where he immersed himself in prayer and meditation. He also shone in dynamic pursuits, such as track and field, volleyball and football.

In 1964 he received an inner Call to share the fruits of his meditation with spiritual seekers in the West. He left India and moved to New York. From then until his passing in 2007 Sri Chinmoy tirelessly dedicated his life to world peace and to the unlimited potential of the human spirit.

Sri Chinmoy: Writings About Incense

In addition to creating an atmosphere of worship and purity, the ascending fragrance and aspiration which accompany the burning of incense bring down from Heaven certain spirits and higher beings. They are invoked through the consciousness of sincere devotion.

Incense has been used for thousands of years in India and when it is used, it invokes certain ancient, divine forces. It allows them to stay peacefully. It purifies the atmosphere. It is their food; it is a kind of fruit to them.

When we look at a burning incense stick, we feel immediately the beauty of purity. The fragrance of the incense purifies our inner existence and transports our aspiring consciousness to a higher plane.

O incense-breathing morning,
I love your beauty’s smile.
O peace-spreading evening,
I admire your well-deserved rest.

Sri Chinmoy: Writings On Meditation

A Sea Of Tranquility

Meditation is like going to the bottom of the sea, where everything is calm and tranquil. On the surface there may be a multitude of waves, but the sea is not affected below. In its deepest depths, the sea is all silence.

When we start meditating, first we try to reach our own inner existence, our true existance - that is to say, the bottom of the sea. Then, when the waves come from the outside world, we are not affected. Fear, doubt, worry and all the earthly turmoil will just wash away, because inside us is solid peace. Thoughts cannot trouble us, because our mind is all peace, all silence, all oneness. Like fish in the sea, they jump and swim but leave no mark.

So when we are in our highest meditation we feel that we are the sea, and the animals in the sea cannot affect us. We feel that we are the sky, and all the birds flying past cannot affect us. Our mind is the sky and our heart is the infinite sea. This is meditation.

When you meditate,
Think of a morning flower
Smiling and smiling,
Radiating its beauty and
Offering its fragrance.
This is how you can make friends
With your soul
And fly with it infinitely higher
Than the confines of the mind.
